Animal Narcissism?
Yesterday Diane and I were at the Bronx Zoo with some friends.
There were a lot of peacocks strutting about – there they are allowed to go pretty much wherever they want and they seem to often go into areas that would be restricted to other animals.
A couple of times we saw peacocks that were clearly confused and fascinated by their own reflections. Below is a picture of a peacock that was pecking at its own reflection for perhaps as long as an hour.

In another location at the zoo, we saw four peacocks strutting about with their tail feathers fully extended. Here is a picture of one of them.

There’s some saying that goes along with this . . . can’t think what it is. Proud as a chicken? Showing off your wing feathers? Hmmm.
You didn’t mention the horrible sounds the peacocks make. They wander freely at the San Francisco zoo as well, and their cries are pretty annoying sometimes.
Hey Dan,
we saw that same peacock when we were there not long ago.
My grandma and grandpa used to take us little girls to visit friends who had peacocks. We got a real thrill out of them. It was a magical thing to us. I never noticed the squacks but I guess it fits with good looking men demanding attention.
