12,000 Calories A Day

Michael Phelps is my hero because he wins gold medals in swimming AND fuels all that exercise by eating 12,000 calories a day.  The New York Post writes that “the average man of the same age needs to ingest about 2,000 calories a day” and then specifically describes the massive meals Phelps eats so he can leave all opponents in his wake.

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase “Breakfast of Champions” by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.  He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza. He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Awesome.

Jogger + Juggler = Joggler

On our walk in Central Park this morning, we saw this guy jogging and juggling at the same time.

I pointed at my camera, he grinned in response and I snapped this picture.

I came home and googled a bit, to see if I would find out anything about this. I ended up learning that “joggling” is a well-established form of exercise and those who engage in this are called “jogglers.”

Here is the wikipedia entry on the subject.

Here is a post with links to interviews with seventeen different jogglers on a blog dedicated to the subject of joggling.

So if you ever get bored jogging, now you know what to do.

Ducks

It was a glorious Saturday morning.  Lots of sunshine but not too hot.  So we went to Central Park for a nice extended walk.

Some ducks were having a great time swimming around.

New Jogging Baseline

I jogged for twenty minutes this morning, incorporating a new path extension into my jogging route.  My previous baseline was fifteen minutes but I was starting to get bored.  It was definitely time to extend it a little bit.

I recently heard that for a person to start losing weight, he or she needs to exercise for an hour a day.  I have no idea where that idea/statistic came from - but maybe down the line I’ll reach that kind of daily activity.

I’m still seeing a fat man in the mirror - but I know if I get myself out and exercising four times a week, and keep building on the exercise habit, that this will eventually change.

Temporary Error 502

Edit: it’s been fixed now.

Can’t login to Gmail right now … here’s what it’s telling me:

We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

I’m curious just how “temporary” this error will be. That I can remember - never had a login problem with Gmail until now.
