[... continuing my recent discussion of helpful plugins for WordPress users ...] Sometimes I’ll link to my own blog posts - which means I end up with a ‘ping’ from my own blog post hitting my comments. This self-pinging issue becomes clutter. I found a plugin called “No Self Pings” that will hopefully put a stop to this problem. I’ll see how it works.
I’ve begun to experiment with the Simple Tags Plugin and am finding that it provides the user with extraordinary capability to quickly add and edit tags on posts. It’s really quite a powerful and easy-to-use plugin. I highly suggest it to anyone who has upgraded to WordPress 2.3.
I would not be surprised if this plugin code is adopted into the core of future versions of WordPress. It offers so much control and versatility with the tags feature. I’ve only begun using it and am already feeling that it’s going to become essential.
I was using WordPress posts to study Genesis verses in a variety of languages that I’ve studied (Hebrew, Arabic and Spanish) and to look at what online commentaries had to say about those verses.
Then one day I upgraded to WordPress 2.2 and the language coding in a whole bunch of past posts turned to unrecognizable mush. I found that rather discouraging and never got around to fixing it.
This morning I stumbled across a blog post that showed a very simple fix for the problem. All a person had to do is remove four characters from the wp-config.php file.
So now the previously described code mush looks like Hebrew and Arabic again. You can see what I’m talking about here.
This may just mean that I’ll have to return to my occasional or even constant verse study exercises.
Justin Blanton’s Smart Archives plugin is useful and I’ve used it to resucitate my archives page. I thought it would provide a list of categories as well - maybe I have to tinker around a little more or look at some other plugins. Either way, it’s a feature I’ve been meaning to add/fix in this blog for some time now.
I’m also going to look for a way to add a list of tags or a tag cloud to the same page. Since one of the main features of the updated WordPress 2.3 is to add tags, this capability is probably built in.
Update:
I’ve been able to add a “tag cloud” to the archives page (scroll all the way down) but it’s still not really looking the way I expected or desired. The code I used was this:
Popular Tags
I’ll have to keep tinkering with this until I like it. I’ll also need to start adding tags to past posts so that this will work the way I would want. Oh … and at some point I also want to add a list of categories to the same page. It may be a little while until I figure out the format I really want for this …
