I have a new pet peeve and it’s leading me even further in the direction of deciding that printer companies are evil. First they charge us more for ink cartridges than for the printers themselves. Now they have added an entirely new gambit.
In the past week, both at work and at home, I’ve received new Hewlett Packard printers. Both times the printers came without a USB cable that was absolutely necessary to get the printer to work. I looked up the price of one of these USB cables online and it added $19.99 to what had previously seemed like a good deal (after a mail-in rebate - but that’s a whole different pet peeve topic).
I googled around to see if I was the only person supremely irritated by this practice. I found one article here that shows Hewlett Packard isn’t the only company doing this. This writer compares this experience to purchasing a television and taking it home only to discover that a power-cord isn’t included. Interesting analogy. A commenter on that same post refers to this as a “razer-and-blade-sell.”
I think this is a deceptive practice because of the consumer’s unanticipated added cost. Unless you are a complete tech-geek with lots of extra equipment lying around, it’s also a major time-waster - because you either have to make another trip to the store or wait for the ordered part to arrive.
Frankly, if I plunk down a hundred dollars on a piece of equipment, I expect it to work when I take it home. Period. This is really irritating and I’m barely able to keep from writing what I’m feeling in even plainer language.
I’ve been working on upgrading to WordPress 2.2 and in the process hit a few bumps.
First, thou shalt not delete wp-config.php - a commandment that I broke. Be ye not so foolish. While I had a backup of sorts - there were still some problems. That is why the blog was down for a day or two. Thanks to Rusty Johnston for basically helping me get past some persistent problems I was having with that particular file and getting the blog back up.
Second, the Hebrew and Arabic portions of a bunch of posts did not survive the journey. I’m actually glad that happened at this stage because it helps me realize I need to find another approach to plugging these languages into posts. Hopefully there is a method for doing this that will survive future upgrades. That’s something I’ll have to figure out.
Third, I’ve never been fully satisfied with the way my last theme (from Glued Ideas) was working. This was not through any fault of the designers - as they had created a lot of features I liked. There were just certain aspects I wanted to be different but did not have the time to change. Consequently, you may see some experiments with themes in the near future.
Fourth, there are some bugs in the way I did this past upgrade (besides deleting the wp-config.php file) that I need to address.
Thank you for your patience. My approach to these kinds of things is that they are learning experiences. I am a huge fan of WordPress. Sometimes the flexibility, adaptability and sheer power of the WordPress platform creates its own problems - because it leaves you with so many choices and options. But that is life and I am not really complaining.
Suggestions, ideas and constructive criticisms are welcome.
I just found a new favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor: Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream. It is described as “Peach Ice Cream with Cinnamon Sugar Shortbread Pieces & a Peach Swirl.”
With ice cream I tend to favor the pure fruit flavors, though every now and then I’ll go for chocolate. My previous favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor was just plain raspberry ((In fact I love just about product that is primarily based on the raspberry - pie, jam, ice cream, etc. - for a nice detour check out the wikipedia entry for “raspberry“)) - but I haven’t seen that Ben and Jerry’s flavor in stores for years. I don’t think it exists anymore.
I’m generally less crazy about ice creams that have a lot of nuts and cookies mixed in - though I certainly don’t mind adding toppings to make a sundae.
All I can say is that this new Ben and Jerry’s brand is a keeper. I really hope it stays around. The Ben and Jerry’s website actually has a “flavor graveyard” page for all the ice creams it doesn’t make anymore.
I enjoy seeing the musicians who show up in the New York City subways. They play their music for all who pass by and sometimes someone will drop some change or a dollar in the guitar case or whatever open container has been placed for that purpose.

Y dijo Dios:
Hagamos al hombre รก nuestra imagen, conforme รก nuestra semejanza;
y seรฑoree en los peces de la mar,
y en las aves de los cielos,
y en las bestias,
y en toda la tierra,
y en todo animal que anda arrastrando sobre la tierra.
And God said,
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
and over the fowl of the air,
and over the cattle,
and over all the earth,
and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Additional LDS scriptural sources:
Moses 2:26
And I, God, said unto mine Only Begotten, which was with me from the beginning: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and it was so. And I, God, said: Let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Abraham 4:26
And the Gods took counsel among themselves and said: Let us go down and form man in our image, after our likeness; and we will give them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Notes/Questions:
This is a verse that shows up in the LDS scripture mastery verses that seminary students study. From the LDS perspective, we take the idea that we are created in God’s image very literally - because we believe God has a physical body. Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 reads:
The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as manโs; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.
It has never seemed strange to me to believe in a God who has a physical body - particularly from a Christian vantage-point - since the New Testament teaches that Jesus was resurrected in a physical manner - that he made a point of eating and allowing himself to be touched after the resurrection.
There is something else interesting in this verse - the phrase “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:” which seems to point to a plurality of Gods.
