This past Friday night we watched Akeelah and the Bee. It was our Netflix video, Diane’s pick.
At first I wasn’t interested. I hadn’t heard of it and thought a movie about a girl and a spelling bee would be boring. It wasn’t.
It’s a fantastic show. Strong characters, including (perhaps especially) the female characters. Extraordinary family and community values on display in believable yet dramatic ways. A great story. Give it a shot.

We really liked it too. Kind of felt sorry for the kids with all of the pressure from their parents. We also saw “Bee Season” with Richard Gere. That was interesting but disturbing at the same time. My vote is for Akeelah.

Have you seen Searching For Bobby Fisher? I suspect it’s the same sort of movie. We loved it, I’ll have to check out this movie you recommend. Thanks. And if you haven’t seen it, rent Searching for Bobby Fisher.
