Amaron, Ammaron, Ammoron, Amoron

Time for a Book of Mormon trivia quiz. There are four personalities in the Book of Mormon who have similar names, though each name is spelled slightly differently.

These names are Amaron, Ammaron, Ammoron and Amoron.

If you are able to identify who these figures are without referring to the text at all, you are probably some kind of Book of Mormon trivia freak. If you can’t identify who any of them are, then you will be slapping yourself in the head. At least one, arguably two of them, are prominent Book of Mormon personalities.

Keep track of how well you do before scrolling down to the answers below.

Amaron – the son of Omni and the brother of Chemish. He is one of the brief Book of Mormon writers in the one-chapter book of Omni.

Ammaron – one of the final Book of Mormon prophets who is inspired to hide up the prophetic records as the Nephites and Lamanites become more and more wicked. He hides the records in a hill called Shim in the land of Antum. When Mormon is only ten years old it is Ammaron who tells him about the location of the records and gives him further instructions about what to do with them.

Ammoron – the brother of Amalickiah. He succeeds as king of the Lamanites after Teancum assassinates Amalickiah with a javelin. Alma Chapter 54 contains a rather antagonistic exchange of epistles written by captain Moroni and Ammoron. In the end, Teancum assassinates Ammoron just as Teancum assassinated Ammoron’s brother. As Ammoron dies, he wakes his servants and they kill Teancum. Ammoron’s son Tubaloth continues the Lamanite wars against the Nephites.

Amoron – this name appears only once in the Book of Mormon. According to the prophet Mormon, Amoron reported to him the horrific atrocities that the Lamanites were committing against the Nephites at the tower of Sherizzah.

My wife called me amoron last night!

I could identify two of them: Amaron and Ammaron. I remember Amaron because I’ve always liked the book of Omni, especially v. 9.

Personally, I had to look them all up as the names by themselves didn’t say much to me. I should add that I didn’t really spend too much time thinking about it, but pretty much dived into looking them up. Maybe if I had looked at the names for a few minutes and thought about it a little more.

Seeing the similarly spelled names together can create confusion. I had two full-time missionaries over here this morning for a ward missionary meeting. One of the elders said that he couldn’t match the identities with exact spellings but he thought he knew who two of them were. He was only able to come up with a correct description of Ammaron’s identity. A recent convert who also attended the meeting and is close to finishing the Book of Mormon for the second time was able to place Ammoron at the end of Alma. She was also aware that he had something to do with an epistle. I thought that was pretty good.

I’m thinking most LDS wouldn’t get more than two of these right, regardless of how many times they’ve read the Book of Mormon. For that reason I think this little quiz makes for a useful exercise.

    Real question:

Do we really think that these correspond to four different names in reformed Egyptian? Or is it likely that they’re all the same in the original text, and just spelled differently, inadvertently, in English?

  6. Daniel B. says:

That’s a good question Kaimi. And I don’t know the answer to it.
