A Rendezvous With Kandinsky

Today I went into the Helly Nahmad Gallery on Madison Avenue. I just happened to be walking by and was intrigued by the list of artist names I saw through the door and windows. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Wassily Kandinsky’s name was on the list.

I buzzed the door and they allowed me inside. I went up one flight and quickly came face to face with three large original paintings by Kandinsky. To me this was a breathtaking experience. I saw the following paintings:

Balancement / Balancing / Balance
Painted in January 1942
mixed media on canvas
selling for $5,000,000

Pfeil zum Kreis (Arrow toward the circle)
Signed with monogram
80 x 110 cm
selling for $5,000,000

Vers Le Haut/ Upward / Nach Oben
painted in June 1939
selling for $6,000,000

In addition to these colorful large works by Kandinsky there was also a wonderful standing mobile scupture (on a glass table) by Alexander Calder. The sculpture was titled “Extra Long Crink Tail” that was created in 1970.

I was very happy to be able to stand and examine closely some of Kandinsky’s original works. I told one of the workers there how much I liked Kandinsky and she asked another person there to provide me with a catalogue. This catalogue turned out to be a beautiful book that was full of colorful pictures of Kandinsky paintings.

Kandinsky’s works - most if not all of them - are among my favorites. Not that I really have an informed list of favorites :) But I love his work.
